Transferable Skills - You have them too!

It is sad but generally true that most new graduates have no actual work experience in their chosen field or profession. This is often reflected in their resumes as a complete lack of job history.

However, what they lack in experience they can compensate for a little, in the area of skills.

When I give this advice to students seeking assistance with their resume, I'm often greeted with blank looks. They will insist that they have no skills worth mentioning. This reaction often makes me laugh and at times hair-pulling moments are had.

We, the human race, are kind of awesome, because we have the capability to take skills we learn from one experience into another circumstance despite the differences in contexts.

What I'm trying to say is that all of us have some form of skill that can be transferred from one job into another job. Guess what? This form of skill has a nifty name too - transferable skills, according to the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) some of the common transferable skills are;
  • Communication skills
  • Team work skills
  • Problem-solving
  • Initiative and enterprise skills
  • Planning and organising skills
  • Self-management skills
  • Learning skills
  • Technology skills

Remember, everyone has transferable skills, it is just a matter of sitting down and writing down all the ones you have obtained in your life.
