Shan Shan is a graduate of the University of Western Australia in Psychology and English. She is also a graduate of Curtin University of Technology in Finance and Accounting. She joined the Advantage program at the beginning of 2005 and since then has been involved in various roles at AELC. She currently holds the role of Internship Co-ordinator for the Ausaid Leadership Development Program managed by AELC for the Australian Government.

It has become almost a write of passage for new graduates to travel overseas, but more and more are deciding to live and work in other countries. The University Graduate Survey found that only 10 percent of graduates don’t want to work overseas.
While working overseas has many benefits, both professional and personal, graduates need to make sure they plan their adventure well.

In the past month or so I have had the opportunity to meet many university students in a professional setting. I was struck by how badly they conducted themselves in front of potential employers. Handshakes, and saying thanks were completely absent. Basic actions considered to be common courtesy were completely absent.

I’m sitting on the train as I’m typing this blog post. Most students are fairly familiar with Public Transport. As someone who only uses public transport to get from point A to B, I have had the pleasure of observing people in several states of demeanour. Some are interesting, some are amusing but mostly the people that travel on public transport can be quite annoying. It is only in the past 6 months or so that I have observed an increase in Transperth employees on the trains and the information booths.

My girlfriend and I go on weekly walks; I push the stroller with the babies and she takes charge of the dog. We discuss everything from Mortgage rates to baby puke. Yesterday, we got on the topic of her job at a franchise coffee place and she told me that her current Manager, who still attends university, was in the process of writing resumes to find a job post-university in her field of study. Oh, and she wasn’t going to put anything about her Managerial role at said franchise business. It was, in her words, “Not acceptable, because I’m studying Finance.” I had one of those moments where I wanted to find the closest wall and smash my head against it, repeatedly. |
