| Basic Etiquette – Errors of Inexperience |

In the past month or so I have had the opportunity to meet many university students in a professional setting. I was struck by how badly they conducted themselves in front of potential employers. Handshakes, and saying thanks were completely absent. Basic actions considered to be common courtesy were completely absent. Simple courtesies such as saying hello, excuse me and thank you are apparently a rare thing amongst university students. It seems that common courtesy isn’t really that common anymore. The level of arrogance of some of the students left a lasting impression of people that I would not want to associate with on a professional level. The last thing you want to do is come across as a rude and arrogant “know it all”. Greet people, say thank you and do not interrupt people until they are finished talking. Confidence and arrogance are two very different things. Being polite and listening to others can take you a long way. Check out my post on How to perform a good handshake.
